The importance of "talking the talk": male feminists and visibility - Hugo Schwyzer

I learned early a basic truth that I repeat to my students and my mentees every chance I get: the acid test of a man who claims the mantle of feminism (whether he calls himself a feminist or a “feminist ally” isn’t particularly relevant) is not how only how he treats women, but how he deals with the men in his life. Feminist men need to be able to be vocal allies of women even when there are no women around; in all-male and mixed settings, male feminists have a special obligation to stand against misogyny. If that’s too scary to do in “real life”, it surely isn’t too much to ask in the world of the blogosphere, where nasty language doesn’t carry with it the threat of imminent physical violence.

Sixteen hours per week: boys, girls, video games, and expectations - Hugo Schwyzer

Amanda at Pandagon linked last week to this summary of a study from the journal Sex Roles, reporting that college-aged women spent considerably less time playing video games than their male counterparts. No surprise there, but the key explanation for the discrepancy is chilling:

“Our findings suggest that one reason women play fewer games than men is because they are required to fulfill more obligatory activities, leaving them less available leisure time,” said Jillian Winn of MSU’s Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media, and one of the co-authors of the study.

Words are not fists - Hugo Schwyzer

Hugo Schwyzer has a great article on the ways men use to deflect feminist anger:

There’s a conscious purpose to this sort of behavior. Joking about getting beaten up (or putting on the football helmet) sends a message to young women in the classroom: “Tone it down. Take care of the men and their feelings. Don’t scare them off, because too much impassioned feminism is scary for guys.”

Women's Voices : "Stop Funding My Failing State" - The Daily Beast

This article has some really interesting insights into the situation in Pakistan from Fatima Bhutto, niece of the late Benazir Bhutto. I understand that not everybody cares about international affairs, and it might be a stretch to link the situation there with women’s studies (though there are certainly women’s rights issues in play), but I just wanted everyone to hear this clear, educated female voice coming out of Pakistan. So often we focus on women in places like Pakistan as nothing but victims, and we view their lives as horribly repressed. It is easy to forget that Pakistan was the first Muslim country to democratically elect a female head of state, all the way back in 1988. I think it is important for us to see women around the world as empowered actors, not helpless victims. It is also important for us to remember and acknowledge how our (America’s) role in world affairs has affected women’s rights around the world, for better and for worse.

With that in mind, I am introducing an occasional article series called Women’s Voices that will feature the writings of influential women around the world. Regardless of the topic being discussed, I think it is important for AWS members to read, contemplate and discuss who these women are and what it is they have to say.
